Conrad Li
Conrad LI is a contemporary ceramic artist who was born in Hong Kong, grew up overseas and now permanently resides in Hong Kong. He graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Arts and Design in Vancouver in 2003, majoring in Ceramics. He has exhibited his artwork in Canada and Hong Kong, and his ceramics were selected for exhibition in Vancouver International Airport from 2003 to 2007.
Conrad specializes in wheel-thrown functional ceramics and his pottery skills have developed through years of practice. He considers ceramic art has an important role to play in daily life, because by holding a piece of ceramic we can feel it with our heart while we appreciate its beauty. His passion lies in creating everyday stoneware objects like jugs, bowls, teapots and pourers which combine beautiful shapes and fabulous colours. His artwork attracts a wide range of interest, from being collected by ordinary people, to being commissioned by private collectors.
In recent years the aesthetics of Conrad’s work lies in achieving harmony among creativity, materials and process.
“Material in its different states is essential to the process of creating artwork before realizing an ideal form. To preserve a particular clay state, I insist on not over-polishing or over-sculpting. The traces which form on the clay surface act as a record of the rhythm between the rotation of the pottery wheel and my impassioned contact with the art object.
The slightly asymmetrical shape captures the softness and plasticity of a soft clay state which is a fragile beauty. In contrast, when the clay is in a fairly dry state, it produces a rough surface, creating bold and unconstrained impressions. In pursuance of the beauty of ideals, I seek to preserve the characteristics of the materials used in the creative process, in the hope of creating a subtle sense of elements in harmony.”
