Tree of Life is a mixed-media ceramic installation centered around a hand-sculpted face mask glazed in bronze lustre. Drawing inspiration from the facial markings of the Suri women of Ethiopia, the work integrates personal symbolism with cultural memory. A tree motif at the center of the forehead gives rise to real tree trunks, evoking the archetype of the Tree of Life and its themes of connection and transformation.

The piece incorporates ammonite fossils, minerals, seashells, and a ceramic bird with Herkimer diamond eyes—materials drawn from nature and rich in symbolic significance. Mounted on a panel of aged Chinese elm wood once used as a traditional door, the sculpture bridges personal reflection with ancestral resonance, grounding the work in time, culture, and continuity.

Artist Statement
Tree of Life reflects my ongoing exploration of the spiritual links between humanity and nature. Inspired by the Suri people’s use of facial motifs as expressions of identity and spirit, this work channels the symbolic power of the tree—growth, rootedness, and transformation. I was especially drawn to the practices of Suri women, who use their faces as living canvases, expressing beauty, tradition, and inner strength through bold, symbolic patterns. Their motifs often reflect deep spiritual and cultural meanings, making women both creators and bearers of heritage—an idea that resonates strongly in this work. Here, the face becomes a vessel where memory and energy converge.

Natural elements like fossils, minerals, and shells are carefully integrated not just for their texture and age, but for their energetic resonance. They speak to the quiet, enduring voice of the earth. The ceramic bird with Herkimer diamond eyes adds a final layer of clarity and vision to the composition, acting as both guardian and guide.

Through Tree of Life, I hope to invite viewers to reflect on their place within the greater rhythm of nature. The rising tree form represents our spiritual longing to grow, connect, and reach upward—while remaining grounded in the earth. The fossils, minerals, and natural elements speak of ancient memory and energy, reminding us that the universe is not separate from us, but flows through us. I created this piece to celebrate the deep, invisible threads that link humans to nature, the Earth to the cosmos, and life to spirit—a reminder that we are all part of one living, breathing system.

Artist Statement:

“Nature encompasses the phenomena of our natural world, our physical life, and the mysterious universe. Materials like clay, rocks, crystals, and fossils, having silently witnessed millions of years of Earth’s evolution, embody this profound connection. The fleeting beauty and fragrances of flowers, especially roses, despite their brief lifespan, can create a joyful and positive atmosphere. Trees, with their roots reaching deep into the ground and branches stretching towards the sky, symbolize the interconnectedness of universe, earth and humanity.’

“I integrate crystals and fossils from my private collection into my nature-themed artworks. By using old wood as a backdrop, I aim to highlight their unique qualities and natural beauty. My creations are designed to manifest positive energy and invite viewers to explore the philosophical and spiritual connections between nature and beyond. I hope to enable them to perceive the often-overlooked voices of nature, opening their minds to a deeper understanding of our world and its mysteries.”
