Stephen Yeung Chi Wing, a self-taught artist born in Guangzhou, China in 1956, has nurtured a lifelong passion for painting that began in childhood. At age 15, he embarked on his artistic journey as an art instructor, later relocating to Hong Kong in 1976 to dedicate himself fully to oil and acrylic painting. Over decades of practice, Stephen’s work has evolved into a distinctive fusion of meticulous realism, vivid impressionism, and abstract expressionism. His signature style bridges contemporary and traditional aesthetics, employing dynamic brushwork—bold abstract strokes juxtaposed with intricate detailing—to craft instantly recognizable compositions. His subjects span the poetic beauty of oceans and waves, the energy of urban landscapes, the delicacy of florals, the charm of feline companions, and the serenity of rural vistas. His exceptional talent has garnered prestigious accolades, including recognition at the Chinese National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 2009 and 2014.

At the Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong 2025, Stephen will debut a new series of oil paintings that poignantly explore themes of nostalgia and the passage of time within Hong Kong’s ever-evolving historical narrative. This collection serves as a heartfelt homage to the city’s cultural metamorphosis and urban transformation over decades. Through his masterful blending of abstract textures and impressionist techniques, Stephen captures the fragile essence of fading memories against modernity’s relentless tide. Alongside these contemplative works, the exhibition will feature his acclaimed depictions of crashing waves, whimsical objects, vibrant florals, and enigmatic cats—subjects that have become hallmarks of his celebrated oeuvre.

楊志榮（Stephen Yeung Chi Wing）為自學成才的藝術家，1956年出生於中國廣州，自幼便展現出對繪畫的熱愛。15歲起，他便投身藝術教育工作，並於1976年遷居香港，專注於油畫及壓克力創作。經過數十載的潛心鑽研與創作，楊志榮逐漸發展出融合細膩寫實、鮮明印象派與抽象表現主義的獨特風格。他的作品穿梭於當代與傳統之間，以大膽的抽象筆觸交錯細膩的描繪細節，構築出極具辨識度的構圖語言。

他筆下的題材多樣，涵蓋海洋與浪濤的詩意之美、城市風景的律動能量、花卉的細緻柔美、貓咪的靈動神情與鄉村風光的靜謐雅致。他憑藉卓越的藝術造詣，於2009年及2014年兩度獲選參與中國全國美術作品展，備受肯定。

在 2025 年的香港 Affordable Art Fair 藝術博覽會中，楊志榮將展出全新系列的油畫作品，深入探討香港歷史變遷中的懷舊情懷與時間流轉。這一系列猶如對城市文化蛻變與都市景觀轉化的深情致敬，見證香港數十年來的演進。他以抽象肌理與印象筆法交織構築畫面，凝視那些在現代洪流中逐漸淡去的記憶之影。除了這些富有哲思的新作，展覽亦將呈現他歷年備受推崇的經典主題：氣勢磅礴的海浪、趣味十足的物件、色彩繽紛的花卉與神秘靈動的貓咪——這些元素早已成為其藝術風格的代表符號。

Set against the dazzling lights of the Hong Kong skyline, this painting highlights the often-overlooked scaffolding workers who quietly support the city’s growth. In Hong Kong, bamboo scaffolding is a traditional construction method still widely used today. Lightweight, flexible, and strong, bamboo has helped shape the city’s skyline for generations. By featuring these workers, the painting draws attention to their vital role in building and maintaining the city. It’s a tribute to the people who work behind the scenes—those whose efforts, though rarely noticed, are essential to Hong Kong’s development and identity.

Hong Kong’s dazzling nightscape is a symbol of its energy and relentless drive, but behind this brilliance lie countless unsung heroes whose efforts have shaped the city's success. Through The Unsung Heroes of Hong Kong, I pay tribute to the skilled bamboo scaffolding workers, inviting viewers to reflect on the true foundations of this metropolis.

In this painting, I create a striking contrast between the city's modern glow and the understated presence of the workers. The vibrant city lights capture the dynamism of contemporary Hong Kong, while the distant Kowloon skyline is rendered in muted grey tones, evoking a sense of history and time. The scaffolding and workers, though painted in subdued colors, remain distinctly visible, symbolizing their vital yet often overlooked contributions. Through this visual contrast, I seek to highlight that Hong Kong’s success is not solely built on skyscrapers and economic growth, but on the labor and perseverance of its grassroots workers.

By blending abstract elements with intricate brushwork, I aim to convey both the vitality of this city and the people who have built it. I hope this piece not only pays homage to the past but also encourages a deeper appreciation for the contributions of those who remain behind the scenes, shaping Hong Kong’s ever-evolving skyline.

在香港璀璨天際線的映照下，這幅作品聚焦於那些默默支撐城市發展的竹棚工人。時至今日，竹棚架仍是香港廣泛沿用的傳統建築工法——輕盈、韌性且堅固的竹材，世代以來形塑著這座城市的輪廓。透過描繪這些工人的身影，畫作喚起觀者對他們在建構與維繫城市中關鍵角色的關注。這是獻予幕後英雄的禮讚：那些鮮少被注視，卻對香港發展與身份認同至關重要的無名耕耘者。

藝術家自述
香港的絢麗夜景象徵著城市的活力與不息追求，然而這份璀璨的基石，是無數隱沒於光影中的無名英雄。《都會暗影中的擎天者》以竹棚匠人為題，致敬這些技藝精湛的勞動者，邀請觀者凝視這座大都會的真正根基。

在此畫作中，我刻意營造都市現代光輝與工人質樸身影的強烈對比：躍動的霓虹捕捉當代香港的蓬勃脈動，遠處的九龍天際線則以灰濛色調暈染，隱喻時光積澱的歷史重量。竹棚架與工人雖以沉穩色調呈現，其形影依然清晰可辨，象徵他們至關重要卻常被漠視的貢獻。透過此視覺張力，我試圖揭示香港的成功不僅立基於摩天樓宇與經濟數據，更源自基層勞動者的汗水與堅持。

融合抽象筆觸與細膩描繪，我力求同時傳遞這座城市的生命力與其建造者的精神圖譜。但願此作不僅是對過往的致意，更能喚起人們對幕後耕耘者的深刻覺察——正是他們，以血肉之軀編織著香港不斷蛻變的天際線。

Hong Kong is a city in constant transformation, shaped by its people, history, and ever-changing skyline. In Beneath Lion Rock, I seek to capture this evolution—how a city continues to modernize and grow, while remaining deeply rooted in the resilience and spirit of its people. This work is a tribute to the “Lion Rock Spirit,” showcasing the determination, perseverance, and solidarity passed down through generations—values that have driven Hong Kong’s success.

My inspiration comes from Kowloon City during the 1960s and 1970s, a vibrant, raw, yet character-rich era. On the rooftops of low-rise buildings, laundry lines, old television antennas, and roaming cats tell stories of grassroots communities striving to build a life within limited means. Overhead, a plane descends into Kai Tak Airport—once a vital symbol of Hong Kong’s global connection. Today, the airport is part of history, and the skies above these rooftops are quiet, reflecting the passage of time.

In the background, the Kowloon Walled City appears with its dense and autonomous urban form, portraying a unique ecosystem—chaotic yet full of vitality. Here, people found order in disorder, adapting and surviving against the odds, embodying the same tenacity and adaptability seen across Hong Kong. And in the far distance, Lion Rock stands tall, bearing silent witness to the city’s struggles and triumphs, symbolizing the spirit that continues to drive Hong Kong forward.

I blend realism, impressionism, and abstraction, using low-saturation greys to evoke nostalgia, while expressive brushwork brings history to life. Through Beneath Lion Rock, I hope to bridge the past and present, encouraging viewers to reflect on Hong Kong’s transformation while honoring the enduring spirit that continues to uphold this city.
