Stephen Yeung Chi Wing

Stephen Yeung Chi Wing, a self-taught artist born in Guangzhou, China in 1956, has nurtured a lifelong passion for painting since childhood. At the age of 15, he began his journey as an art instructor, eventually moving to Hong Kong in 1976 to focus on oil and acrylic painting. Over the years, Stephen's works have evolved into a unique blend of detailed realism, vibrant impressionism, and abstract art. His distinctive style combines contemporary and traditional approaches, using a mix of colors and brush strokes—abstract strokes combined with detailed painting—to create a signature style that is easy to recognize. He captures the diverse beauty of oceans, waves, cityscapes, people, flowers, cats, and countryside scenes. His remarkable artistry has earned him prestigious awards, including recognition at the Chinese National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 2009 and 2014. Actively participating in exhibitions and events in Hong Kong, he continues to engage with the local artistic community, with his paintings acquired by collectors both locally and internationally.

At Fine Art Asia 2024, Stephen will present his new series of works, "Traces of Time," which explores the theme of nostalgia and the passage of time in Hong Kong's history. This collection of oil paintings is a heartfelt tribute to the cultural shifts and urban transformations that have shaped Hong Kong over the decades. Through his unique oil painting techniques, blending abstract and impressionist styles, Stephen aims to capture the essence of old memories amidst the changing times, evolving culture, and cityscape in Hong Kong.

Echoes of Simplicity簡樸之聲. Stephen Yeung 楊志榮

Stephen Yeung's latest oil painting, "Echoes of Simplicity," brings forth a nostalgic vision of Hong Kong’s beloved Goldfish Market. The painting masterfully contrasts the vibrant goldfish, a symbol of luck in Chinese culture, with a serene, grey-toned background, creating a compelling narrative of tradition amidst modernity.

In this artwork, a solitary cat gazes intently at a group of goldfish swimming inside a transparent plastic bag, a familiar sight at the fish markets in Hong Kong. The goldfish, rendered in vivid orange hues, stand out against the muted tones, symbolizing the enduring beauty and simplicity of life that persists despite the encroachment of modern technology.

Stephen Yeung, a cat lover, uses this imagery to evoke fond memories of a simpler time when children would spend hours watching their pet goldfish, free from the distractions of today’s digital age. The painting not only celebrates the enduring charm of the Goldfish Market in Kowloon, where generations of Hong Kong families have gone to buy their luck-bringing pets but also serves as a gentle reminder to appreciate the simple joys in life.

Through this piece, Yeung invites viewers to reflect on the contrast between the unchanging habits of animals, like the cat's fascination with fish, and the rapid technological changes that have transformed human lives. This artwork is a call to reconnect with the quiet, simple moments of beauty that remain around us, often unnoticed in our fast-paced world.

As Fine Art Asia 2024 approaches, "Echoes of Simplicity" stands as a tribute to Hong Kong's cultural heritage and the enduring charm of its traditional markets. Visit the Goldfish Market and experience a piece of Hong Kong's past before it fades away into history

Stephen Yeung

Stephen Yeung’s latest oil painting masterfully captures the vibrant essence of Hong Kong, blending realism, impressionism, and a touch of imagination to depict the city’s evolution over the past 70 years. The artwork showcases a mesmerizing view of Victoria Harbour, with the iconic Star Ferry calmly traversing the water, connecting the past with the present.

In this painting, the viewer is taken on a visual journey through time. The background subtly blends three distinct eras of Central Hong Kong, reflecting the city’s transformation from a humble fishing village into a bustling global metropolis. The architectural landmarks, from the historic old Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank building to the modern Bank of China tower, stand as silent witnesses to the city’s dynamic growth.

The vibrant skyline, painted with rich textures and vivid colors, portrays the energy and diversity of Hong Kong, known as the "Pearl of the East" and one of the Four Asian Dragons. The city’s colorful night lights and towering skyscrapers contrast beautifully with the serene waters of Victoria Harbour, symbolizing the continuous evolution and prosperity of this ever-changing city.

Yet, amidst the modernity, the painting evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminding viewers of the unchanging beauty of Hong Kong’s beloved landmarks, such as the Star Ferry, which remains a cherished symbol for both locals and visitors alike. Stephen Yeung invites the audience to reflect on Hong Kong’s rich cultural heritage and the harmonious coexistence of tradition and progress.
