Zer 0 的突破 is more than just an exhibition title — it’s a play on words carrying a powerful message.
In Chinese, the word for "zero" (0) is pronounced “Ling”, which sounds identical to the word for age (齡).
This clever twist highlights the core spirit of this exhibition: a group of elderly women, all aged over 70 — with the oldest participant being 77 — who stepped into the world of ceramics with "zero" experience.
This story began during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many elderly people faced heightened anxiety and uncertainty. Wanting to give back to the community, ceramic artist Solan Chiu took the lead, personally offering free pottery workshops to these senior students at the Giant Year Gallery studio. To further enrich their learning, guest artists were also invited to share their expertise along the way.
Meeting regularly, these women — who had never worked with clay before — learnt the skills and gradually unlocked their creativity in ceramics, discovering their own artistic voice along the way.
From knowing nothing about ceramics to gradually mastering techniques, these elderly students slowly discovered their creative voices, allowing their artworks to tell their personal stories and express their emotions.
Now, after years of dedication and practice, these women are proudly exhibiting their works alongside their teacher Solan Chiu and the guest artists who guided them, in this special joint exhibition — a celebration of their artistic journey and proof that creativity can bloom at any age.
Zer 0 的突破 sends a hopeful and empowering message: no matter how old you are, it’s never too late to start learning something new, to discover your creative voice, and to turn zero experience into a beautiful story.
We warmly invite you to visit "Zer 0 的突破" (A Joint Ceramic Exhibition by Teacher and Students, organized by Giant Year Gallery) at K & J Gallery to support these inspiring artists and celebrate the idea that every creative journey can start from Zer 0 的突破 — at any stage of life.
Zer 0
